Cataract Outreach Program in Rural Nepal
15 Dec 2025 • case story
Intro:
Cataract remains one of the leading causes of avoidable blindness in rural Nepal, where access to surgical eye care is limited.
Description:
A multi-day outreach eye camp was organized in a remote district, providing eye screenings to over 1,200 individuals. Patients diagnosed with operable cataracts were transported to a partner surgical center. Surgeries were performed using standardized protocols, followed by post-operative checkups and counseling.
Impact:
More than 180 cataract surgeries were successfully completed. Patients regained functional vision, leading to improved mobility, productivity, and social participation. The program demonstrated the effectiveness of outreach-based referral systems in reducing preventable blindness.
